Warning! Get a waterproof cover

Postby Red Leader » 09 Dec 2009, 11:40

I post this advice for the benefit of all new members. Strongly recommend you get a waterproof cover to store in the boot. I've experienced one roof failure in 30 months of ownership and luckily it was a lovely sunny day. But imagine if you're driving roof down and suddenly it pours and the roof fails!!!!!!!!!!! :-o

Get a waterproof cover for your boot JUST IN CASE!!

You can get them very cheaply on ebay and if nothing else if gives you peace of mind :D

Can I suggest that you don't store it in the boot, if the roof gets jammed, you may not be able to access the boot, maybe store it in the pockets behind the seats ??

Very good point Oz. If the roof fails you may have no access to the boot...

As for the iced up windows... already had this a couple of weeks ago. What a pain in the a*se that was.

Dear All

Here is a link to our earlier blogs on this subject - nearly two years ago now.

I knew I'd mentioned the cover from ALDI - very cheap!

I keep the cover with a cagoule and yellow vest behind the driver's seat.

what-to-do-if-your-roof-will-not-close-t54.html

(I also keep the "ski hatch" unlocked so that I can reach in the boot and pull things out of the boot from within the cockpit).

Hope nobody gets any serious problems during the cold spell.

P2

True story - my barber bought a Ford CC in the Autumn last year, bought all his Christmas shopping, put it in the boot...guess what? He couldn't get the boot open when he got home. The dealer prevaricated until MARCH. Then at Easter he got a brand new replacement car from Ford central (with a few extra goodies for goodwill) and of course he was able to hand out his Christmas presents as Easter presents.

I have a 56 TT that leaks in the boot again. Got my leaks covered by warranty in past now just putting up with it. A little tip if you get the leak sorted or if not, when cleaning your car all the rubber seals need cleaning, use Pledge or another good furniture polish as it has silicon in and that protects and lubricates the rubbers round your roof and boot, and helps to stop leaks. :hmm:

Have you tried the button with the engine running and about 1500 revs??
It gives the battery a little more power and might give it the oomph to unstick the fin motor.

Thanks Ozzie, you beat me to it; just about to say the same thing.

Ever since I learnt to move the roof with the engine running a little fast I have NEVER had the sticking fins problem.

Best wishes (and hope that's now all sorted for you)

thanks guys, i got in it last night and tried the button and it just worked, no extra revs or anything!! i'l bare that in mind in future tho!! i've just spent the last 2 hours emptying the boot of water! just waiting for the interior to dry out now!! dont know why i tried the roof at 12 oclock at night with no water proof cover! if it wasnt for the 8 rublle bags stuck together in an attempt to save my seats, it probably would have been alot worse!! thanks again!

Dear borgy

Glad this is sorted.

Please can you reveal the car registration number; my nephew is looking to buy a Twintop; I wouldn't want him to end up with this one a few months down the line.

Let's keep your problems within the club/family.

Many thanks

I had exactly the same problem a couple of weeks ago with my 1.8 design 09reg. I've often had a problem with one of them sticking particularly when I use the key to activate the roof. Anyway two weeks ago, mine did exactly the same and I drove under the cover of darkness at 7.20am to the local Vauxhall dealership with the roof in the boot, the boot open and the 'plastic parcel shelf' from where the flaps come out stuck in the air like an aerofoil. Had to have two new motors fitted under warranty. All fine now, infact I suspect there always was a problem with it as now it works fine with the key!

my head was battered when it happend! its been working fine since its all been lubricated tho. i even treated all my rubber seals today with the silicone spray stuff! that was messy! couldnt resist goin for a quick spin with the roof down while i was at it. got some funny looks with it only bein 5 degrees out!

Twintop, not too sure about neil40. but i'v got the instruction book on how to do the manual roof procedure, and from the looks of it the roof either has to be in the fully open posistion or the fully closed posistion for it to be of any use. our roofs are going into the boot as they should, but the parcel shelf doesnt come back down and the boot lid doesnt close so we cant do it manually!

Yes I have my instruction book too. Although it wasn't a lot of help when i had to manually put up the roof. The AA chap in the end put on a video in his van. The roof had just gone into the boot and the boot was still up in the air when it jammed (and guess what... his video didn't account for that! lol). Hence was a total nightmare to get to the pressure release valve. We finally managed to 'unclip' the hinge on the boot and in the end it came up completely on so that we were able to get to the valve and then manually put up the roof. Put it this way, I will be renewing the AA membership when my free year which came with the car expires!! - I should point out .... Other vehicle recovery and assistance services are available!!!

I can better your 30 months with 1 roof failure i brought mine on tuesday of this week and it is now back in the garage as of 5pm yesterday! they have told me that the roller curtain in the boot is whats at fault because it does not retract, this is fortunately being repaired under my warrenty. is this a quick fix? as i have to collect my car and wait till next week for the part to come in.

The roof will not operate unless it IS in place ie across the boot so the fact that it won't retract is irrelevant because the detectors are in the little cups that hold the curtain open...

when i took it back to the garage to look at having this part replaced (this was before the roof itself became faulty) the guy at the service desk pulled the curtain which jammed it out further. Bacause of this being done i have been told the roof must not be used at all and have to wait for the part to come on wednesday.

Hi,
I Took ownership of my Sport TT last night and love it. Picked up allot of tips from this forum, thanks... but excuse my ignorance.. what exactly is a PRE-icer.... which I need to spray around my windows in the winter ? is it the same as a DE-icer which I would use on my windscreen?
Also does anyone know of anywhere I can get a windbreak without paying the earth from the dealership ?
thanks

Dear Aliwoo, I have just bought a wind deflector on e-bay, I paid £75 for it.
You can pay a lot more for them, you might be lucky and pay less.

Dear aliwoo and redcol,

PRE-icer is a little different from DE-icer. For a start it often comes in a much smaller aerosol can size.

The liquid is more glutinous (is that the right spelling?). You put it around the seals and locks the night before and it prevents the frost from setting in. I have used it with great success the last couple of winters.

In the first winter I had the car (2007 - December) I learnt the hard way. We were staying on holiday in the Lakes and there was a severe frost. In the morning the tops of the doors were frozen to the roof panel and wouldn't "DIP" to allow the doors to open until after lunchtime. (Fortunately there were lots of lovely places to go walking while we patiently waited.
I posted on the website at the time with some pictures of the roof crystals. I also posted a warning not to force open the doors in this situation for fear of the glass in the side windows shattering.

Hope you are able to find some PRE-icer locally. I found mine (and a waterproof cover) in Lidl (perhaps Aldi).

Best wishes,

P2

Also handy to have de-icer in the boot as opposed to in the car.
